Red Suspenders Day began in 1961 as a dance to raise revenue for the volunteer firemen of Gridley. It’s now a community-wide celebration spanning two days of family fun and events.
2017 schedule of events
Unjustice Court. Nominate your favorite person to be “jailed” in Rotary Park Friday May 19 until they raise enough money to make bail. Arrest warrants will be available in the Gridley Herald and at the Chamber Office for free. They can be purchased and filled out before or the day of the court. “Offenders” will be arrested by either the Volunteer Police or the Fire Department and brought to Rotary Park to stand before Judge Dean Price. They will be sentenced, jailed and fed water or soft drinks and pizza. They will have to arrange for their bail to be paid before they can be discharged. The amount depends on the “seriousness” of the charge and the ability to pay. People are allowed to come photograph their friends and/or relatives behind bars.
Guns ‘n’ Hoses vs. the Little League Coaches at Vierra Park for softball Friday night starting at 6 PM.
Annual Biggs Street Dance Friday, May 19 at 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM Downtown B street Biggs, Ca.
Saturday morning at 7 AM, the Little League, Masonic Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus bring out the griddles for the finest Pancake Breakfast anywhere
Classic cars will be on display from 8 AM -1 PM downtown at Kentucky Street & Hazel Streets. Sponsored this year by Gridley Cruizers, there will be cars, trucks, and motorcycles in the show. Awards will be given for the best in class, plus there’ll be music and a 50/50 raffle. There is no entry fee. Contact Gene and Paula at 530-846-2342 to enter or for more information.
Vendors for food, gifts, and services will be downtown all day Saturday from 8 AM – 4 PM. Vendors need to arrive to set up between 6-8 AM.
The parks will be buzzing with games, rides, a bounce house, and pony rides, from 10 AM – 4 PM. Live music in Daddow Park from 12:30- 2 PM
2nd Annual Run Around the Rice Saturday, May 20 at 8 AM – 12 PM Benefiting Biggs Elementary School. This family friendly fun run/walk is open to all ages and fitness level. Come enjoy the beautiful views, nature and our farming community all while getting a little exercise.
The Bed Races are Saturday on Virginia Street in front of Daddow Park. Wanna run in the fun, bed races application is here to join the bed races. Mind the construction and do not enter the park, please.
A Pie-eating Contest is scheduled at the announcer’s booth on Virginia Street.
The Parade begins downtown Saturday morning at 11:30, organized and managed by the Gridley Lion’s Club. Prizes for best entry in the parade are awarded, and winners posted at the Chamber office at 890 Hazel Street. VIP seating available for Platinum sponsors, contact the Chamber for more information.
Firemen’s Games and tests of strength and endurance between Gridley and Cal-Fire’s finest start Saturday afternoon.
The Pinewood Derby is Saturday at 1 PM. Car check in is at 12:30 PM. Contact the recreation department at (530) 846-3264 to get your official pinewood derby kit.
The Gridley Museum Tri-Tip dinner ends the day from 4-7 PM with a fine meal for a good cause. Outdoor seating and take out available.
